The Members

Those who have been baptized in water shall be members in full communion of the Church. New converts who are studying these "Biblical Instructions" in order to be baptized in water shall be considered as probationary members.

1. Requirements to be a member of the Church:

  • To have been born again and to confess their purpose to be faithful to the Lord. (John 3:3; Romans 10:9-10).

    Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.

    That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

    For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

  • To show the fruits of true repentance (Matthew 3:8; 2 Corinthians 5:17).

  • To be properly married, that is, not to live in concubinage. (1 Corinthians 6:9; 1 Corinthians 7:2, 10-11; Hebrews 13:4).

    Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind,

    And unto the married I command, yet not I, but the Lord, Let not the wife depart from her husband:

    Marriage is honourable in all, and the bed undefiled: but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge.

  • To accept and fulfil these biblical instructions (Matthew 28:19).

  • If coming from another church, to bring a letter of recommendation from the pastor.

2. Duties of the Member:

  • To live a life consecrated to the Lord and keep oneself unstained from this world. (2 Peter 1:4-8; 1 Corinthians 6:9-11).

    Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.

    And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge;

    And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness;

    And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity.

    For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  • To win souls for Christ. (Matthew 4:19; Acts 8:4).

  • To honour, respect, obey, and properly support their pastor. (1 Thessalonians 5:12-13; Hebrews 13:17; 1 Corinthians 9:12-14).

    And we beseech you, brethren, to know them which labour among you, and are over you in the Lord, and admonish you;

    And to esteem them very highly in love for their work's sake. And be at peace among yourselves.

    Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you.

    If others be partakers of this power over you, are not we rather? Nevertheless we have not used this power; but suffer all things, lest we should hinder the gospel of Christ.

    Do ye not know that they which minister about holy things live of the things of the temple? and they which wait at the altar are partakers with the altar?

    Even so hath the Lord ordained that they which preach the gospel should live of the gospel.

  • To support the work of God with their tithes and offerings. (Malachi 3:10; Matthew 23:23).

    Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.

    Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.

  • To attend services and Sunday school with constancy and punctuality. (Hebrews 10:25).

  • To consecrate Sunday to the service of the Lord. (Genesis 2:2-3; Acts 20:7).

    And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.

  • To hold family worship every day.
  • To be reverent in the House of God; to avoid all conversation; not to get up during the service to go in and out; to watch their children so they are not walking about the sanctuary; to bring their Bible and hymnal to the service; to pray as soon as they arrive at the church.

3. Privileges of the Member:

  • The pastor will strive to give them the pure message of the Word of God, which is of incalculable value, given that there are so many heresies. (Acts 20:27-28).

    Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.

  • They will be visited at home by the pastor.
  • They will take part in the activities of the church.
  • They will participate in the Lord's Supper. (1 Corinthians 11:23-31).

    For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, that the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread:

    And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me.

    After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, this cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me.

    For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord's death till he come.

    Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord.

    But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup.

    For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord's body.

    For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep.

    For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged.

  • They may be appointed to hold offices in the church. (1 Timothy 3:8-13).

    Likewise must the deacons be grave, not doubletongued, not given to much wine, not greedy of filthy lucre;

    Holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience.

    And let these also first be proved; then let them use the office of a deacon, being found blameless.

    Even so must their wives be grave, not slanderers, sober, faithful in all things.

    Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well.

    For they that have used the office of a deacon well purchase to themselves a good degree, and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus.

  • To represent their church at conventions.
  • They may be appointed by the pastor as a "lay worker" to help in the church and in new fields.

4. Obligations toward other Members:

  • To visit the sick, help the needy, comfort the sorrowful, and keep harmony. (1 Thessalonians 5:14; Hebrews 12:14; James 1:27; Matthew 25:35-40).

    Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord:

    Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.

    For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in:

    Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me.

    Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink?

    When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee?

    Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee?

    And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.

  • To pray for the brother whom they see commit a fault. (1 John 5:16; 1 Thessalonians 5:15).

    If any man see his brother sin a sin which is not unto death, he shall ask, and he shall give him life for them that sin not unto death. There is a sin unto death: I do not say that he shall pray for it.

  • To withdraw from anyone who promotes dissensions and divisions. (Romans 16:17; 2 Thessalonians 3:6-7, 13-15).

    Now we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye withdraw yourselves from every brother that walketh disorderly, and not after the tradition which he received of us.

    For yourselves know how ye ought to follow us: for we behaved not ourselves disorderly among you;

    But ye, brethren, be not weary in well doing.

    And if any man obey not our word by this epistle, note that man, and have no company with him, that he may be ashamed.

    Yet count him not as an enemy, but admonish him as a brother.

  • To maintain brotherly love. (Romans 12:10).

5. Obligations toward the World:

  • To live a holy life so as to provide an effective testimony of the power and grace of God; to give their testimony to the unconverted; to love their enemies. (1 Peter 2:9-10, 25; 1 Thessalonians 5:22; Matthew 5:13-16; 2 Corinthians 5:18-19; Matthew 5:43-48; 1 Timothy 2:8).

    Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.

    For ye were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls.

    Abstain from all appearance of evil.

    Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.

    Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.

    Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.

    Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

    And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation;

    To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.

    For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same?

    Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.

    I will therefore that men pray every where, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting.

It is interesting that the highest birth rate in the whole world is in our Latin America; therefore, today as never before in the history of the Church, the Lord's words apply in the sense that "the labourers are few". In view of this and the individual responsibility of the Christian, every believer must be a soul winner. It was the members of the church in Jerusalem who, when scattered, gave the first great impetus to the evangelization of the world. (Acts 8:4).
