Holiness

1. God is holy. He requires that His children be holy (1 Peter 1:15-16).

1 Peter 1:15-16

But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation;

Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.

2. Holiness means:

  • Clean from all impurity (2 Chronicles 29:5, 15; 2 Corinthians 7:1).

    And said unto them, Hear me, ye Levites, sanctify now yourselves, and sanctify the house of the Lord God of your fathers, and carry forth the filthiness out of the holy place.

    And they gathered their brethren, and sanctified themselves, and came, according to the commandment of the king, by the words of the Lord, to cleanse the house of the Lord.

    2 Corinthians 7:1

    Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

  • Separated from sin (1 Thessalonians 4:3; 2 Corinthians 6:17).

    For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication:

    2 Corinthians 6:17

    Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you.

  • Dedicated to God (Romans 12:1-2).

    I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.

    And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

3. Holiness is attained by:

  • Faith in the Word of God (John 17:17; Ephesians 5:26).

    Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.

    That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,

  • Faith in the blood of Christ (Hebrews 10:10, 29).

    By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

    Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace?

  • The work of the Holy Spirit (1 Peter 1:2; Galatians 5:16, 22-25).

    Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied.

    This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.

    But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,

    Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

    And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.

    If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.

4. The time when sanctification is realized:

  • Immediate in part: at the time of conversion (1 Corinthians 6:9-11).

    Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind,

    Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.

    And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.

  • Progressive: the believer will strive to perfect sanctification (2 Corinthians 7:1).

5. Aspects of holiness:

True holiness has two aspects: the internal and the external; that is, the aspect of the heart and the aspect of conduct. One has to do with motives, the other with actions. Internal holiness is a state of purity wrought by the Holy Spirit. External holiness is a life of righteousness and devotion to the highest ideals of the Gospel. Internal holiness will always be manifested externally, maintaining high standards of conduct, different from those of the world. The sanctified believer will be different both inwardly and outwardly. There are those who say that "what is on the outside does not matter," but the Bible teaches that it does matter (Isaiah 3:16-26; Ezekiel 23:40; 1 Peter 3:3-5; 1 Timothy 2:9; Titus 2:3; 1 Corinthians 11:15; Deuteronomy 22:5).

Moreover the Lord saith, Because the daughters of Zion are haughty, and walk with stretched forth necks and wanton eyes, walking and mincing as they go, and making a tinkling with their feet:

Therefore the Lord will smite with a scab the crown of the head of the daughters of Zion, and the Lord will discover their secret parts.

In that day the Lord will take away the bravery of their tinkling ornaments about their feet, and their cauls, and their round tires like the moon,

The chains, and the bracelets, and the mufflers,

The bonnets, and the ornaments of the legs, and the headbands, and the tablets, and the earrings,

The rings, and nose jewels,

The changeable suits of apparel, and the mantles, and the wimples, and the crisping pins,

The glasses, and the fine linen, and the hoods, and the vails.

And it shall come to pass, that instead of sweet smell there shall be stink; and instead of a girdle a rent; and instead of well set hair baldness; and instead of a stomacher a girding of sackcloth; and burning instead of beauty.

Thy men shall fall by the sword, and thy mighty in the war.

And her gates shall lament and mourn; and she being desolate shall sit upon the ground.

And furthermore, that ye have sent for men to come from far, unto whom a messenger was sent; and, lo, they came: for whom thou didst wash thyself, paintedst thy eyes, and deckedst thyself with ornaments,

Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel;

But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.

For after this manner in the old time the holy women also, who trusted in God, adorned themselves, being in subjection unto their own husbands:

In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array;

Titus 2:3

The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things;

1 Corinthians 11:15

But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering.

Deuteronomy 22:5

The woman shall not wear that which pertaineth unto a man, neither shall a man put on a woman's garment: for all that do so are abomination unto the Lord thy God.

6. Standards of holiness:

In view of all these biblical admonitions, the Church must strive to maintain high standards of internal and external holiness. Therefore, Christian women must abstain from wearing extravagant, short, sleeveless, low-cut, transparent dresses, pants, earrings, necklaces, excessive adornments, shaving their eyebrows, etc. Likewise, Christian men must abstain from all vain appearance and from any masculine fashion that is ridiculous and from effeminate clothing (2 Corinthians 6:17-18).
