Objectives of the Christian Church

Followers of Jesus Christ who reside in the same community must gather together and form a local church (Matthew 18:17, 20; Acts 8:1; Acts 9:31; Hebrews 10:25).

Matthew 18:17, 20

And if he shall neglect to hear them, tell it unto the church: but if he neglect to hear the church, let him be unto thee as an heathen man and a publican.

For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.

Acts 8:1

And Saul was consenting unto his death. And at that time there was a great persecution against the church which was at Jerusalem; and they were all scattered abroad throughout the regions of Judaea and Samaria, except the apostles.

Acts 9:31

Then had the churches rest throughout all Judaea and Galilee and Samaria, and were edified; and walking in the fear of the Lord, and in the comfort of the Holy Ghost, were multiplied.

Hebrews 10:25

Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.

The main objectives of the Christian church are:

  • To worship God in spirit and in truth (John 4:23-24; Colossians 3:16).
    John 4:23-24

But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.

God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.

    Colossians 3:16

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.

  • To impart knowledge of the Holy Scriptures for growth in life and Christian virtues (2 Peter 3:18; 2 Timothy 3:14-17; Psalms 119:9; 2 Corinthians 7:1; John 13:34).
    2 Peter 3:18

But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.

    2 Timothy 3:14-17

    But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them;

And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.

All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.

    Psalms 119:9

Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to thy word.

    2 Corinthians 7:1

Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

    John 13:34

A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.

  • To spread the Gospel everywhere (Mark 16:15; Acts 1:8).
    Mark 16:15

And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.

    Acts 1:8

But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

Attending the house of God regularly should be the firm purpose of the believer, for it provides indescribable blessings:

  • It produces joy (Psalms 122:1; Psalms 16:11).
    Psalms 122:1

I was glad when they said unto me, Let us go into the house of the Lord.

    Psalms 16:11

Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.

  • They will behold the beauty and glory of God (Psalms 27:4).
    Psalms 27:4

One thing have I desired of the Lord, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord, and to enquire in his temple.

  • They will enjoy the delights of fellowship with the brethren (Psalms 133:1).
    Psalms 133:1

Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!

  • They will participate in public worship of God, receiving edification (Ephesians 5:19; Colossians 3:16; 1 Corinthians 14:16).
    Ephesians 5:19

    Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;

    Colossians 3:16

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.

    1 Corinthians 14:16

Else when thou shalt bless with the spirit, how shall he that occupieth the room of the unlearned say Amen at thy giving of thanks, seeing he understandeth not what thou sayest?

  • They will be able to pray in a favorable environment (Isaiah 56:7; 2 Chronicles 6:20-21).
    Isaiah 56:7

Even them will I bring to my holy mountain, and make them joyful in my house of prayer: their burnt offerings and their sacrifices shall be accepted upon mine altar; for mine house shall be called an house of prayer for all people.

    2 Chronicles 6:20-21

That thine eyes may be open upon this house day and night, upon the place whereof thou hast said that thou wouldest put thy name there; to hearken unto the prayer which thy servant prayeth toward this place.

Hearken therefore unto the supplications of thy servant, and of thy people Israel, which they shall make toward this place: hear thou from thy dwelling place, even from heaven; and when thou hearest, forgive.
