The Church of Christ

The Church is the body of Christ, the dwelling place of God through the Holy Spirit, divinely appointed for the fulfillment of the Great Commission (Mark 16:15). Every convert born of the Holy Spirit is a member of the general assembly and church of the firstborn, whose names are written in heaven (Ephesians 1:22-23; Hebrews 12:23).

Mark 16:15

And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.

Ephesians 1:22-23

And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church,

Which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all.

Hebrews 12:23

To the general assembly and church of the firstborn, which are written in heaven, and to God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect,

1. The Church of Christ is a People:

  • Redeemed by the Blood of Christ (Ephesians 1:7).
    Ephesians 1:7

    In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;

  • Separated from the world (1 Corinthians 6:16-18).
    1 Corinthians 6:16-18

    What? know ye not that he which is joined to an harlot is one body? for two, saith he, shall be one flesh.

    But he that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit.

    Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body.

  • Dedicated to God (Romans 12:1-2).
    Romans 12:1-2

    I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.

    And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

  • That believes the Gospel (John 20:31).
    John 20:31

    But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.

  • And practices Christian precepts (Titus 2:11-14).
    Titus 2:11-14

    For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men,

    Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world;

    Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;

    Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.

2. The Spiritual Nature of the Church:

The Church is compared to:

  • A Body (Ephesians 1:22-23). Christ is the head (Ephesians 1:22; Ephesians 5:23), and believers are the members of the Body (1 Corinthians 12:12, 27), highlighting the vital and spiritual relationship between Christ and believers and among themselves.
    Ephesians 1:22-23

    And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church,

    Which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all.

    Ephesians 1:22

    And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church,

    Ephesians 5:23

    For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body.

    1 Corinthians 12:12, 27

    For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ.

    Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular.

  • A Building or Temple (1 Corinthians 3:9, 16). Christ is the foundation and "chief cornerstone" (1 Peter 2:6-7); the apostles and prophets form part of the foundation together with Christ (Ephesians 2:20, 22), and believers are the living stones that form the spiritual building (1 Peter 2:5), highlighting that Christ is the Rock on which the Church is founded; that He is the High Priest of this Temple (Hebrews 4:15), and that God dwells in that spiritual Temple (Ephesians 2:21-22; Matthew 18:19-20).
    1 Corinthians 3:9, 16

    For we are labourers together with God: ye are God's husbandry, ye are God's building.

    Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?

    1 Peter 2:6-7

    Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded.

    Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner,

    Ephesians 2:20, 22

    And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone;

    In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.

    1 Peter 2:5

    Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.

    Hebrews 4:15

    For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.

    Ephesians 2:21-22

    In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord:

    In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.

    Matthew 18:19-20

    Again I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven.

    For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.

  • A Bride or Wife (2 Corinthians 11:2; Revelation 19:7). Christ is the Bridegroom or Heavenly Spouse and believers the Bride, illustrating here the pure and mystical love between Christ and the Church (Ephesians 5:25-27; Revelation 19:6-9).
    2 Corinthians 11:2

    For I am jealous over you with godly jealousy: for I have espoused you to one husband, that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ.

    Revelation 19:7

    Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready.

    Ephesians 5:25-27

    Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;

    That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,

    That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.

    Revelation 19:6-9

    And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunderings, saying, Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth.

    Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready.

    And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints.

    And he saith unto me, Write, Blessed are they which are called unto the marriage supper of the Lamb. And he saith unto me, These are the true sayings of God.

Through these figures we can see how intimately united believers must be with Christ, so that there may be vital Christianity and true membership in the Body of Christ.

3. The condition for belonging to the Church:

The main condition for belonging to the Church is regeneration or the new birth (John 3:3-5; John 1:12-13). There are three steps that lead to regeneration:

John 3:3-5

Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.

Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born?

Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.

John 1:12-13

But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:

Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

  • Faith in Jesus Christ and in the merits of His blood that cleanses from all sin (John 14:6; John 3:16, 36; Acts 16:31; Ephesians 1:7; 1 John 1:7, 9).
    John 14:6

    Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

    John 3:16, 36

    For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

    He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.

    Acts 16:31

    And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.

    Ephesians 1:7

    In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;

    1 John 1:7, 9

    But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.

    If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

  • True repentance (Acts 2:38; Matthew 9:13). True repentance consists in understanding (mind) that one is a sinner, feeling (soul) sorrow for having sinned, and abandoning (will) sin, confessing it to God (1 John 1:9; John 8:11; John 5:14; Proverbs 28:13).
    Acts 2:38

    Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

    Matthew 9:13

    But go ye and learn what that meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice: for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

    1 John 1:9

    If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

    John 8:11

    She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.

    John 5:14

    Afterward Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said unto him, Behold, thou art made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee.

    Proverbs 28:13

    He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy.

  • Public confession of faith in Christ (Romans 10:9-10; Mark 8:38).
    Romans 10:9-10

    That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

    For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

    Mark 8:38

    Whosoever therefore shall be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation; of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he cometh in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.

4. The Work of the Church:

  • To preach the Gospel to every creature (Matthew 28:19-20; 1 Peter 2:9-10).
    Matthew 28:19-20

    Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:

    Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

    1 Peter 2:9-10

    But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light;

    Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.

  • To provide a means of worship (Ephesians 5:19; Colossians 3:16; 1 Corinthians 14:16).
    Ephesians 5:19

    Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;

    Colossians 3:16

    Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.

    1 Corinthians 14:16

    Else when thou shalt bless with the spirit, how shall he that occupieth the room of the unlearned say Amen at thy giving of thanks, seeing he understandeth not what thou sayest?

  • To uphold high standards of morality and holiness. The Church is "the light of the world and the salt of the earth" (Matthew 5:13-16).
    Matthew 5:13-16

    Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.

    Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.

    Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.

    Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

5. The financial support of the Church:

Although the salvation of the soul and all divine blessings are obtained without money (Matthew 10:8; Acts 8:18-23), nevertheless, funds are needed to cover the expenses of the Church's work and ministry (Matthew 10:10; 1 Corinthians 9:14; Galatians 6:6; Philippians 4:14-18; 1 Timothy 5:18; 1 Corinthians 16:1-2).

Matthew 10:8

Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give.

Acts 8:18-23

And when Simon saw that through laying on of the apostles' hands the Holy Ghost was given, he offered them money,

Saying, Give me also this power, that on whomsoever I lay hands, he may receive the Holy Ghost.

But Peter said unto him, Thy money perish with thee, because thou hast thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money.

Thou hast neither part nor lot in this matter: for thy heart is not right in the sight of God.

Repent therefore of this thy wickedness, and pray God, if perhaps the thought of thine heart may be forgiven thee.

For I perceive that thou art in the gall of bitterness, and in the bond of iniquity.

Matthew 10:10

Nor scrip for your journey, neither two coats, neither shoes, nor yet staves: for the workman is worthy of his meat.

1 Corinthians 9:14

Even so hath the Lord ordained that they which preach the gospel should live of the gospel.

Galatians 6:6

Let him that is taught in the word communicate unto him that teacheth in all good things.

Philippians 4:14-18

Notwithstanding ye have well done, that ye did communicate with my affliction.

Now ye Philippians know also, that in the beginning of the gospel, when I departed from Macedonia, no church communicated with me as concerning giving and receiving, but ye only.

For even in Thessalonica ye sent once and again unto my necessity.

Not because I desire a gift: but I desire fruit that may abound to your account.

But I have all, and abound: I am full, having received of Epaphroditus the things which were sent from you, an odour of a sweet smell, a sacrifice acceptable, wellpleasing to God.

1 Timothy 5:18

For the scripture saith, thou shalt not muzzle the ox that treadeth out the corn. And, The labourer is worthy of his reward.

1 Corinthians 16:1-2

Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I have given order to the churches of Galatia, even so do ye.

Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him, that there be no gatherings when I come.

Those called to support the work of the Church are its members. It is the sacred duty of the Christian to fulfill the plan God has ordained from the beginning, namely tithes—the tenth part of all our earnings. Long before the Law of Moses, the patriarchs paid their tithes for the support of the worship of God (Genesis 14:18-20; Genesis 28:22). Later the practice of tithing was incorporated into the Law of Moses (Leviticus 27:30-34; Numbers 18:21-26). Fulfilling this was so important that God pronounced special blessings on the faithful and terrible curses on the unfaithful (Malachi 3:8-10).

Genesis 14:18-20

And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God.

And he blessed him, and said, Blessed be Abram of the most high God, possessor of heaven and earth:

And blessed be the most high God, which hath delivered thine enemies into thy hand. And he gave him tithes of all.

Genesis 28:22

And this stone, which I have set for a pillar, shall be God's house: and of all that thou shalt give me I will surely give the tenth unto thee.

Leviticus 27:30-34

And all the tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the land, or of the fruit of the tree, is the Lord's: it is holy unto the Lord.

And if a man will at all redeem ought of his tithes, he shall add thereto the fifth part thereof.

And concerning the tithe of the herd, or of the flock, even of whatsoever passeth under the rod, the tenth shall be holy unto the Lord.

He shall not search whether it be good or bad, neither shall he change it: and if he change it at all, then both it and the change thereof shall be holy; it shall not be redeemed.

These are the commandments, which the Lord commanded Moses for the children of Israel in mount Sinai.

Numbers 18:21-26

And, behold, I have given the children of Levi all the tenth in Israel for an inheritance, for their service which they serve, even the service of the tabernacle of the congregation.

Neither must the children of Israel henceforth come nigh the tabernacle of the congregation, lest they bear sin, and die.

But the Levites shall do the service of the tabernacle of the congregation, and they shall bear their iniquity: it shall be a statute for ever throughout your generations, that among the children of Israel they have no inheritance.

But the tithes of the children of Israel, which they offer as an heave offering unto the Lord, I have given to the Levites to inherit: therefore I have said unto them, Among the children of Israel they shall have no inheritance.

And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,

Thus speak unto the Levites, and say unto them, When ye take of the children of Israel the tithes which I have given you from them for your inheritance, then ye shall offer up an heave offering of it for the Lord, even a tenth part of the tithe.

Malachi 3:8-10

Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings.

Ye are cursed with a curse: for ye have robbed me, even this whole nation.

Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.

Finally, in the New Testament the practice of tithing is affirmed. Referring to the tithe, Jesus said: "This you ought to have done" (Matthew 23:23). Referring to the same matter, Paul wrote: "Even so the Lord commanded" (1 Corinthians 9:13-14). The Lord also promises blessings to those who are faithful in paying tithes (2 Corinthians 9:6-13). The tithe is not a gift; it is a debt (Malachi 3:10).

Matthew 23:23

Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.

1 Corinthians 9:13-14

Do ye not know that they which minister about holy things live of the things of the temple? and they which wait at the altar are partakers with the altar?

Even so hath the Lord ordained that they which preach the gospel should live of the gospel.

2 Corinthians 9:6-13

But this I say, He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully.

Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.

And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work:

(As it is written, He hath dispersed abroad; he hath given to the poor: his righteousness remaineth for ever.

Now he that ministereth seed to the sower both minister bread for your food, and multiply your seed sown, and increase the fruits of your righteousness;)

Being enriched in every thing to all bountifulness, which causeth through us thanksgiving to God.

For the administration of this service not only supplieth the want of the saints, but is abundant also by many thanksgivings unto God;

Whiles by the experiment of this ministration they glorify God for your professed subjection unto the gospel of Christ, and for your liberal distribution unto them, and unto all men;

Malachi 3:10

Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.

In addition to paying tithes, there are voluntary offerings (Exodus 25:2; 1 Chronicles 29:9; Acts 11:29; Luke 6:38). Giving is a grace from God; not giving is a lack of grace (2 Corinthians 8:1-7).

Exodus 25:2

Speak unto the children of Israel, that they bring me an offering: of every man that giveth it willingly with his heart ye shall take my offering.

1 Chronicles 29:9

Then the people rejoiced, for that they offered willingly, because with perfect heart they offered willingly to the Lord: and David the king also rejoiced with great joy.

Acts 11:29

Then the disciples, every man according to his ability, determined to send relief unto the brethren which dwelt in Judaea:

Luke 6:38

Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.

2 Corinthians 8:1-7

Moreover, brethren, we do you to wit of the grace of God bestowed on the churches of Macedonia;

How that in a great trial of affliction the abundance of their joy and their deep poverty abounded unto the riches of their liberality.

For to their power, I bear record, yea, and beyond their power they were willing of themselves;

Praying us with much intreaty that we would receive the gift, and take upon us the fellowship of the ministering to the saints.

And this they did, not as we hoped, but first gave their own selves to the Lord, and unto us by the will of God.

Insomuch that we desired Titus, that as he had begun, so he would also finish in you the same grace also.

Therefore, as ye abound in every thing, in faith, and utterance, and knowledge, and in all diligence, and in your love to us, see that ye abound in this grace also.

There are legions of "transit believers," "tourists," who do not want to become members of any church. They visit them all, wish to enjoy all the privileges of every church, wish to receive a share wherever they go, but do not want to assume the responsibilities of supporting the church. They are like parasites!
